DASH diet and blood pressure reduction in adults with and without hypertension: systematic review and meta-analysis
Meta-analysis of 30 randomised trials (n=5545): versus control diets, DASH lowered pooled systolic blood pressure by 3.2 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure by 2.5 mmHg (both P<0.001; GRADE moderate).
Design
- 30 RCTs, n = 5545
- Outcomes: difference in mean attained SBP/DBP vs control (random- and fixed-effect models; heterogeneity explored)
Pooled BP deltas vs control
- SBP: −3.2 mmHg (95% CI −4.2 to −2.3; P < 0.001)
- DBP: −2.5 mmHg (95% CI −3.5 to −1.5; P < 0.001)
- GRADE: moderate certainty for both (per abstract)
Subgroup signal (abstract)
Larger SBP reductions when trial mean sodium >2400 mg/d and when mean age <50 y—still interpret with meta-regression caveats.
